Dr Stark received a PhD Degree in Botany from Duke University in 1962 with an emphasis on plant and animal ecology. A long career in forest ecology included work in the tropical rain forests in South and Central America, the forests of Australia, the deserts of Nevada and coniferous forests in many parts of the world. Dr. Stark has pursued a lifelong hobby of studying British naval history particularly during the early 1800s when England ruled the seas.
Early interest in ships and the sea came from a grandfather who was captain of a whaler out of Tristan da Cuñha and Capetown, South Africa. A hobby of painting sailing ships became a hobby of building ship models and then morphed into writing stories about the brave men who sailed in those ships so long ago. The stories are dedicated to the men who made history by their sweat and blood but never had a chance to know the power, celebrity and headaches of becoming a captain, a God at sea.
